A Resounding Success! The Inclusive Economy Project \u2018Echa pa\u2019lante\u2019 Kicks Off<\/strong><\/p>

The project will strengthen the skills and abilities of 350 dreamers in various areas related to entrepreneurship and innovation in their businesses.<\/p>

Cartagena is transforming by betting on an inclusive economy, and thus the ambitious \u2018Echa pa\u2019lante\u2019 project was born. The official launch took place on Thursday morning with the attendance of the 350 beneficiary entrepreneurs, who are already eager to realize their dream of creating or strengthening their businesses.<\/p>

\u201cI am from the Arroyo de Piedra community, and my project is related to fish farming. My expectations for this project are high: I want to generate income for the black communities around me,\u201d commented Javier Azuza Ospino.<\/p>

\u2018Echa pa\u2019lante\u2019 is an initiative led by the Mayor’s Office of Cartagena, through its Secretariat of Social Development, in partnership with ACD Consultores, Hocol, and Give it 4ward. It directly impacts populations such as youth, women, people with disabilities, members of the LGBTIQ+ community, and caregivers.<\/p>

\u201cAlong with my husband, Mayor Dumek Turbay, we have walked thousands of streets, hundreds of neighborhoods, and we always hear a constant problem: the lack of income generation for families to sustain themselves. That is why, with the idea of promoting inclusion and hope in Cartagena, \u2018Echa pa\u2019lante\u2019 was born, a social investment program that will transform needs into income through various types of entrepreneurship,\u201d said social manager Liliana Majana.<\/p>

The project, which starts immediately, will strengthen the skills and abilities of these 350 dreamers in various areas related to entrepreneurship and innovation in their businesses.<\/p>

\u201cFulfilling one of the lines of the District Development Plan, equitable economic development, we thought of this unique, comprehensive, and inclusive project. Serigrafia de la Gringa<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Desde 2008 mi negocio Serigrafia de la Gringa hab\u00eda estado operando en c\u00e1rceles de Guatemala proporcionando empleo digno a personas encarceladas. Sin embargo, para 2021 las autoridades corruptas de Guatemala finalmente obligaron a mi emprendimiento social a salir de las c\u00e1rceles despu\u00e9s de mi continua negativa a pagar comisiones ilegales. Muchas mujeres encarceladas que hab\u00edan trabajado honestamente y cuyas familias se hab\u00edan beneficiado econ\u00f3micamente y emocionalmente durante muchos a\u00f1os se quedaron sin trabajo. Muchos de los clientes que hab\u00edamos ganado a lo largo de los a\u00f1os corr\u00edan el riesgo de llevar su negocio a otro lugar. Sent\u00ed que el trabajo de toda mi vida en ofrecer segundas oportunidades hab\u00eda sido destruido. Fue un golpe devastador para m\u00ed tanto profesional como personalmente.<\/p>

En agosto de ese mismo a\u00f1o, vol\u00e9 a M\u00e9xico para reunirme con amigas cercanos que tambi\u00e9n trabajan en la rehabilitaci\u00f3n de prisiones, Saskia Ni\u00f1o de Rivera y Daniela Ancira. Me dieron \u00e1nimos durante este momento dif\u00edcil y sugirieron comenzar mi trabajo nuevamente, al menos temporalmente fuera de la prisi\u00f3n en beneficio de las personas anteriormente encarceladas. Son un grupo que tambi\u00e9n sufre una gran discriminaci\u00f3n en cuanto a oportunidades de trabajo. Parec\u00eda una buena opci\u00f3n para continuar mi trabajo de segundas oportunidades, pero no ten\u00eda idea log\u00edstica ni los recursos financieros para recrear Serigrafia de la Gringa fuera de las c\u00e1rceles. Encontrar un lugar de trabajo adecuado, contratar y capacitar a nuevas personas y adquirir equipos adecuados significaba literalmente comenzar de cero.<\/p>

Proporcionar oportunidades de empleo en las c\u00e1rceles de Guatemala no es un negocio rentable. Todas las leyes y derechos relacionados con el trabajo deben ser respetados igual que fuera de la prisi\u00f3n. Debido a que las personas encarceladas no pueden hacer recibos por el dinero que ganan que sea reconocido como v\u00e1lido ante el IRS, todas las ganancias tienen una triple tasa impositiva aplicada, ya que se consideran ganancias netas para fines fiscales. Les habl\u00e9 a mis amigos sobre mis preocupaciones financieras y Saskia mencion\u00f3 Give it 4ward, una organizaci\u00f3n que ella conoc\u00eda y que apoyaba emprendimientos sociales como el m\u00edo. Inmediatamente los llam\u00f3 y para mi sorpresa, no solo respondieron de inmediato, sino que tambi\u00e9n mostraron un inter\u00e9s real en ayudarme a comenzar de nuevo en beneficio de las madres solteras anteriormente encarceladas.<\/p>

En enero de 2022, mi empresa Serigrafia de la Gringa, con el apoyo de Give it 4ward, estableci\u00f3 su primer taller fuera de la prisi\u00f3n para beneficio de personas anteriormente encarceladas, espec\u00edficamente madres solteras ex reclusas. Serigrafia de la Gringa, ahora fuera de la prisi\u00f3n, ha experimentado su mejor a\u00f1o en ventas y m\u00e1rgenes de ganancia desde su fundaci\u00f3n. Solo en este primer a\u00f1o, un total de 18 personas fueron impactadas directamente con un trabajo honesto, 12 de las cuales son madres solteras. Estas mujeres no solo se beneficiaron con una oportunidad de trabajo honesto, sino que gracias a la ayuda de Give it 4ward, pudieron participar en el apoyo a su propia comunidad local, algo que era imposible desde la prisi\u00f3n. Cada mes, nuestras mujeres donan a organizaciones ben\u00e9ficas o proyectos locales en sus vecindarios o ayudan a proporcionar la asistencia necesaria a sus vecinos. Las mujeres que trabajan para Serigrafia de la Gringa pueden elegir a qui\u00e9n y espec\u00edficamente c\u00f3mo ayudar a su comunidad local. Esto las ha empoderado para que tambi\u00e9n puedan ser parte de ayudar a otros necesitados, como ellas fueron ayudadas.<\/p>

El apoyo de Give it 4ward durante este \u00faltimo a\u00f1o ha renovado y energizado mi esperanza y prop\u00f3sito de vida. Give it 4ward me ense\u00f1\u00f3 a so\u00f1ar en grande. Siempre imagin\u00e9 que un negocio social completo ser\u00eda un negocio peque\u00f1o. Ahora que sue\u00f1o en grande, me doy cuenta de que eso puede no ser cierto. El crecimiento que hemos experimentado este a\u00f1o me ha ayudado a darme cuenta de que no todos los finales significan el fin de la historia, sino el comienzo de un nuevo cap\u00edtulo. Siento la misma pasi\u00f3n por este pr\u00f3ximo cap\u00edtulo que sent\u00ed por el \u00faltimo. “The scars of the past will not bring down my present”: a victim of the conflict.<\/p>

Those are the words of Mayra Geles, who is taking part in the Regional Fair of Entrepreneurial Ventures of Victims of the Armed Conflict that has come to Cartagena with crafts and dreams to fulfill. As time goes by, Mayra Geles M\u00e1rquez is healing the scars left by living in the midst of armed conflict. Those tough times date back to 2011, when, displaced by violence, she fled from San Pablo, a town in the south of Bol\u00edvar where she had everything: happiness, work, and a life ahead with her only daughter.<\/p>

“I lost my job due to the conflict, and because of all the worries, the stress and physical exhaustion, everything was more complicated for me, to start over and move forward amidst sadness and agony. That was eight years ago (…) I was alone, the head of the household, I left without clothes, and left my daughter at my parents’ house and it was two years before I could go for her.<\/p>

“I have suffered because when I was displaced I was without work and away from my loved ones, knowing that I had to bury that past in San Pablo,” she said.<\/p>

Today, eight years later, the outlook is different, but this time full of hopeful traces that emanate from Mar\u00edalabaja, where she consolidated her microenterprise of shoe manufacturing.<\/p>

“I made shoes for myself, but then I saw that it was a beautiful job and I set out to create a company to improve my quality of life. My daughter is at university and I work with this to support the household, because I am the head of the family. I have had the company for eight years and dream that it will grow more and more every day (…) Step by step I have emerged and come out of extreme poverty, but I will never forget everything I had to go through to get here,” she noted.<\/p>

She, along with 37 other entrepreneurial survivors of a gray era, exhibited their creations yesterday at the Regional Fair of Entrepreneurial Ventures of Victims of the Armed Conflict, which was held at the Plaza de Los Coches, in the Historic Center.<\/p>

The event was attended by the Minister of Labor, Alicia Arango Olmos; public servants from the Unit for Victims; the Governor of Bol\u00edvar, Dumek Turbay Paz; the Secretary of the Interior of Cartagena, Jos\u00e9 Carlos Puello, and survivors of the armed conflict.<\/p>

The best tool During the event, the Minister of Labor maintained that entrepreneurship is a solution for victims and their projects, as it allows them to have independence, improve their standard of living and emotionally shows that they can move forward through their businesses.<\/p>

“At the Ministry of Labor we are serving four thousand victims. This year’s budget for victims of the Ministry of Labor is 38 billion pesos (…) It makes us very sad not to be able to reach all the victims, but unfortunately the resources have been very tight, but what I do tell you is that the commitment is to cover the largest number of this population and that results are shown, that it is seen that the victim is solving their insolvency,” she said.<\/p>

Governor Turbay Paz said that this is a multi-handed effort, which they intend to intensify and follow up on. “We have teamed up with the Unit for Victims, with the Department for Social Prosperity, Sena and the victims, where there is pure consolidation. What is required is an initiative that is not only about placing resources but achieving the productive linkages that are needed.<\/p>

“Today we see products of handicrafts, goldsmithing, textile initiatives, and all this with the support of the Nation and the Department allow the productive units to be successful,” said Turbay.<\/p>

The director of the Unit for Victims, Ram\u00f3n Rodr\u00edguez Andrade, stated that they have a commitment to the 350 thousand victims in Bol\u00edvar, emphasizing that in Cartagena the figure is 100 thousand. “We have been providing support in everything, from prevention issues to individual and collective repair, and now support for entrepreneurship. The important thing is that they can strengthen their productive units with resources coming from the Unit for Victims, from humanitarian aid, such as compensation processes. With this, we intend for them to seek income generation, improvement in their living conditions, and training,” She said.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
